Harvey Pekar dead at 70

Harvey Pekar, the creator of American Splendor, was found dead at home at the age of 70.  He had been suffering from a number of health ailments including prostate cancer. Pekar chronicled his own life in the pages of his comic that talked about his time as a filing clerk, record collector, freelance jazz critic and one of life’s all around misfits.  His graphic novel gained a cult following and was turned into the 2003 film American Splendor starring Paul Giametti.  After he was diagnosed with cancer in 1990 his writing was scaled back, but he did create Our Cancer Year in 1994 with his wife Joyce Brabner.
