Outrage over “Hit A Jew Day”

October 24, 2008

School Spirit Week at Parkway West Middle School in Chesterfield, MO turned from good fun to a hate crime and is causing outrage.  The incident involving at least four students occurred last week when they started a Hit A Jew Day that resulted in the hitting of fewer than 10 of the district’s Jewish students. The week began with Hug A Friend Day, High Five Day, and moved on to Hit A Tall Person Day, then the Jewish Day.  The concern is that many students knew about the targeting of Jewish students and didn’t say anything.  My question is why isn’t the Hit A Tall Person Day being frowned on?  When is it alright for kids to target other kids for being different? Are these just kids being kids or do you think they had some motive for targeting a a specific religious group?
