David Blaine has begun his latest endurance challenge – hanging upside down for almost three days over the Wollmann Ice Rink in New York city. Blaine’s ex-girlfriend and friend, singer Fiona Apple attended the launch of the stunt to make sure David was doing OK and showed great concern as the stunt progressed. Blaine is set to remain in his upside-down state until Wednesday evning despite doctors’ concerns about the stress on internal organs and circulation. He is suspended from a four-story frame that can be lowered so he can speak to fans face-to-face and is able to free one leg so he can use its weight to raise his head to a horizontal position. During the stunt, David is monitored by doctors every 15 minutes and will not eat or sleep, only taking liquid through a straw and passing water through a catheter. Blaine said to reporters that he will use “sheer willpower” to complete the challenge, saying he was inspired by his hero, escape artist Harry Houdini. New York, NY. 9/22/08.
