Estelle Getty dies at 84

Estelle Getty, the sharp tongued comedic actor that is most famous for her role as Sophia on Golden Girls, has passed away at home at the age of 84.   Getty struggled for years trying to find success an an actress, but didn’t get her big break until she was in her 60’s and landed the role of an 80 the year old mother.  I was nine when Golden Girls came on the air and her one liners always got a great laugh.  You can still catch Estelle in syndication nearly 25 years after Golden Girls debuted.

Getty, who had advanced dementia, died about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at her Hollywood Boulevard home, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica.
