College Rant site in trouble

Posted on March 20th, 2008

A simple idea for a site has attracted the attention of New Jersey prosecutors because the site appears to be completely unregulated and spreading some hate. Juicycampus.com is a site where students can anonymously post whatever they want about anyone else. You have the ability to sort by campus which can narrow down the possible rantee being talked about.

New Jersey Attorney General Anne Milgram claims that JuicyCampus may be in violation of the state’s Consumer Fraud Act because it claims to not allow offensive material, but fails to offer users a way to report material.

Last month, a student claimed she had been a victim of a malicious post that included her address on the Web site.

“There’s an unbelievable amount of offensive material posted and absolutely no enforcement,” said Milgram, noting insults about students’ appearance, race and sexual history as “just the tip of the iceberg.”

Of course they will claim free speech and try to see if that will fly, but this was completely avoidable if they just had an apporval or feedback system to protect people from being abused on the site. The site is still currently online, but it takes forever to load so don’t think you will be searching away. In the meantime enjoy a wonderful college site College Humor where people just get a long. They even offer $50,000 if you are a cutie like these ladies here, here, and here.
