Ledger’s Joker to remain intact

March 14, 2008

The untimely passing of Heath Ledger had led to speculation that his last completed role as the Joker in The Dark Knight might be changed in some way.  That rumor has been denied by the director of the film, Christopher Nolan.

“I think he’d be very pleased to see we’re just moving ahead as is,” Nolan said. “If you try to honor somebody, you honor them by respecting their work and putting it out there for as many people to see. He was immensely proud of the work he did on the film. I feel a great burden to present that in an undistorted form.”

I agree with Nolan’s decision to keep Ledger’s role intact.  Ledger had stated in interviews that this role was extremely mentally demanding and caused him to have difficulty sleeping.  Having a role that an actor poured so much of himself into changed would be an insult to everyone involved int movie.  I think this role will have people talking for years just like Jack Nicholson’s Joker has.
