Monster destroys the box office

J.J. Abrams and his mysterious monster controlled the holiday box office defeating all other new comers.  Katherine Heigl’s “27 Dresses” and Katie Holmes “Mad Money” were never in contention for the top spot.  “Cloverfield”  took in a record setting $41 million for a January weekend and will take the record for MLK weekend.  Katie Holmes didn’t get a boost from the Scientology crowd as her new film flopped coming in in seventh place.

5. “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” $8.1 million

8. “Alvin and the Chipmunks,” $7 million
9. “I Am Legend,” $5.1 million
10. “Atonement,” $4.8 million
