When did KITT become a Mustang?

I was a fan of “Knight Rider” growing up like every other kid and the fact that it is back on the air brings a smile to my face. however, when did KITT become a Ford Mustang? KITT was originally a Pontiac Trans Am and has been retooled in the the new series. I am not sure how i feel about this change!
